Public Cloud vs. Private Cloud
We’ve mostly talked about public clouds so far. AWS, GCP, and Azure are public clouds. Anyone can use them.
What if you want to build your own cloud in your own datacenters? That’s called a private cloud.
There are several reasons a company might want a private cloud.
Usually, enterprises build private clouds because they want the advantages of using a cloud infrastructure, but they want complete and total control of their environment.
A business might be concerned about security and privacy. If you have sensitive data, then you may not want the risk of storing it in a public cloud.
A business might use special hardware that’s not available in the public cloud.
A business might have huge amounts of data, so it’s not practical or cost efficient to move all that data into a public cloud.
A business might already have their own services running in their own datacenters, yet they’d like to start developing new services in the cloud. In that case, it makes sense to keep their new cloud as close as possible to their existing services. That would make it much easier to integrate the two together.
There are not many private cloud offerings. The reason is it turns out to be really hard to build a cloud. It takes a great deal of expertise that most companies simply do not have.
Microsoft sells a private cloud product as do RedHat, VMware, and IBM.
That’s about all I have to say on private clouds. You should be aware they exist and are an option. In general, choose a public cloud when possible.
Creating your own private cloud sounds like a great idea, but private clouds are a lot harder to build than you might think.
